At the opening of the 2012 Annual Session of the World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Board on June 4th 2012, the United States announced a new $10 million contribution to the WFP.
“Demonstrating our commitment in these areas,” said Karen Johnson, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome, “we are pleased to announce a 5 million dollar contribution to WFP to support capacity and institution-building for the Food Security Information Network; to support the work of the WFP Gender unit including a gender expert in the Sahel, and the Research into Action program; to enable research in the area of nutritional impact; and to help further WFP’s resilience work.”
The remaining $5 million are un-earmarked funds being provided to the WFP for its greatest needs.
The United States also warmly welcomed the new WFP Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin, and congratulated her on her appointment.
