Secretary Schafer's statement on biofuels, June 4, 2008
(Rome)
I have heard some comments that lead me to believe there is some confusion in regards to statements I made earlier today in regards to biofuels.
We have been encouraged with the significant progress on the biofuels section of the Declaration discussions. While we await the next draft, it looks as though consensus on this important issue is in reach. We hope this spirit of consensus flows into other issues of discussion in the Declaration.
The United States is committed to sustainable biofuels that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase economic development, especially in rural areas, lead to greater energy independence, and lower the huge impact of rising energy prices.
